UNESCO Global Geoparks Management and Sustainability

20-29 June 2025

UNESCO and the Global Geoparks Network are co-organizing the International Course on UNESCO Global Geoparks 2025 which will deal with the topic “UNESCO Global Geoparks Management and Sustainability”.

The Course on UNESCO Global Geoparks will be held from 20th to 29th of June 2025 in Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark (Greece) and it is organized in collaboration with the University of the Aegean-Department of Geography and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest / Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark.

The course provides an opportunity to discover how UNESCO Global Geoparks can make a real impact in local communities and on society as a whole but also provides conceptual issues on UNESCO Global Geoparks.

Lectures will be given by Geoparks experts and academic staff with long experience on Geoparks management and development, geoheritage – geodiversity protection and conservation, education for sustainability and sustainable local development.

The course is open to Geopark’s managers, Geoparks’ staff members with a degree in Geosciences, to PhD and Master students working on Geoparks, geotourism, geosites, geomorphosites and landscape topics, as well as to Geoscientists having a special interest on the topic.

Access: Transportation from Mytilene airport & Mytilene port by coaches will be arranged on June 20th and June 29th (arrival and departure dates).

Registration

All participants are kindly requested to complete the Registration form and submit it electronically or by email to the Organising Committee, to the following address: e-mail: lesvospf@otenet.gr

Registration Fee 

€500 (including lessons by International staff, didactic material, transportation for/from Mytilene airport/port at the arrival and departure, field trips during the course, meals).

Grants: Grants will be awarded after request to limited number of participants

Application deadline 30th of April 2025.

Transportation

Arrival by air: Odysseas Elytis International Airport of Lesvos Island (airport code MJT) has several daily connections to Athens and Thessaloniki.

Charter flights from the UK, Νetherlands and other countries can be also used.

Delegates are strongly recommended to book air travel as early as possible.

Arrival by boat: Ferries to Mytilene depart from Piraeus Port (daily) and Thessaloniki.

Climate : The weather is usually hot in June. Temperatures may reach well above 30° C.
